The legal appointment first

Register the marriage
before the party.

A celebration and a legal marriage in Berlin are two plans. This page points you to the Standesamt service that matches your situation. It does not list a universal set of documents or a fee table. Those live on the official service pages, and they change.

01

Choose the service that matches the partners

Berlin publishes two registration services. Use “mit Auslandsbeteiligung” if at least one partner has a foreign nationality, was naturalised, or was born abroad. Use “ohne Auslandsbeteiligung” if none of that applies. Both say the same frame: register first at the Standesamt for the borough where one partner has a main or secondary residence. If neither partner lives in Germany, the office where the ceremony will take place is responsible. After registration you may marry at any Standesamt in Germany.

02

Book the conversation before you collect papers

The foreign-connection service says both partners normally attend in person, and that the required documents depend on your circumstances. That is why the first step is an appointment, not a folder assembled from a blog. If one partner cannot attend for an important reason, the other can register with a written power of attorney. If both cannot attend, a written registration is possible. Papers that are not in German must be translated by a sworn translator in Germany. Some countries also need an apostille or legalisation on the original. If a partner does not speak enough German, a sworn interpreter has to be included.

03

Use the six-month window on purpose

Both service pages say you can submit the registration at the earliest six months before the date you want. The registration is then valid for six months. Inside that window you may marry. After it, you register again. Book the legal appointment inside the window you were given, and do not promise guests a celebration date that depends on a registration you have not received.

04

Plan the celebration as its own event

The legal ceremony can be a short appointment with a few people. The meal, the room and the guest list are a separate brief: capacity, curfew, catering, a way home, and whether anyone is travelling from another country. The wedding checklist covers that sequence. The civil registration does not reserve a venue, a photographer or a dinner.

What this page will not do

It will not copy the fee list. The service pages publish fees for registration, foreign law, a ceremony at another office, and certificates. Read them there so you are not using a number that has changed. It will not tell you which birth certificate or divorce paper your case needs. The office does that at the appointment. It is not a law firm and it cannot speed up another country’s documents.

Frequently asked

Answers before the next decision.

We both live in Berlin and one of us is not German. Where do we start?

Start with the foreign-connection service and the Standesamt of the borough where one of you has a main or secondary residence. Book the personal appointment. Take the documents they ask for, translated by a sworn translator if they are not in German.

Can we marry in a different borough from where we live?

The service pages say you register at the residence office first, and that you may then marry at any German Standesamt while the registration is valid. An extra fee can apply when the ceremony is at another office. Check the current fee on the service page.

Neither of us lives in Germany. Who is responsible?

Both service pages say that if neither partner has a residence in Germany, the Standesamt where the ceremony will take place is responsible. Contact that office. Do not assume a district you like for the party is the one that can register you.

The party gets easier once the appointment is real.
